Seeds Adoption in Ghana has improved BUT………..

On June 27, 2023, Dr. Zakaria Issahaku, the host of the Diamond FM Agric Dialogue Programme, welcomed Mr. Abdulai from Heritage Seed Company, a member of the NASTAG association, to discuss a pressing topic in Ghana’s agricultural sector: “Enhancing the Usage of Certified Seeds at the Last Mile.”

The engaging discussion shed light on the progress made in seed adoption by farmers across the country especially in northern Ghana. However, it became evident that while seed adoption has improved, there are still challenges in maximizing crop productivity due to inadequate usage of complementary inputs. This blog aims to explore the key takeaways from the conversation and highlight the importance of a holistic approach to agricultural production.

On the issue of Seed Adoption which has witnessed a Positive Shift in Ghana’s Agriculture, the discussion began with an optimistic tone, emphasizing the notable improvements in seed adoption by farmers in Ghana. Thanks to the concerted efforts of organizations like NASTAG and seed companies such as Heritage Seed Company, Mayiya investment limited more farmers are recognizing the value of using certified seeds to enhance crop performance, increase yields, and improve overall agricultural productivity. The promotion of certified seeds has played a crucial role in transforming farming practices and creating a foundation for sustainable agricultural growth.

The Missing Piece: Complementary Inputs for Increased Crop Productivity: Despite the positive strides made in seed adoption, it became evident during the dialogue that the successful adoption of certified seeds alone is not sufficient to maximize crop productivity. Farmers need to understand and employ the proper use of complementary inputs such as fertilizers, pesticides, and irrigation techniques to fully unlock the potential of these high-quality seeds.
Education and Training: Bridging the Knowledge Gap: To address this challenge, the participants emphasized the importance of providing farmers with comprehensive education and training programs. Access to information on appropriate seed selection, agronomic practices, integrated pest management, and soil fertility management is vital. Collaborative efforts between agricultural stakeholders, extension services, and private sector players can significantly contribute to filling the knowledge gap and empowering farmers with the necessary skills to optimize their agricultural outputs.
Partnerships: Strengthening the Agricultural Ecosystem: The successful adoption and utilization of certified seeds and complementary inputs require a collaborative approach. Partnerships between seed companies, input suppliers, extension services, research institutions, and farmers’ organizations are essential to ensure the availability and accessibility of quality inputs. By working together, stakeholders can develop tailored solutions, provide technical assistance, and create an enabling environment for farmers to succeed.
As the dialogue came to an end, it was evident that Ghana’s farmers have made commendable progress in adopting certified seeds. However, for the full potential of these seeds to be realized, it is crucial to prioritize the proper usage of complementary inputs. Education, training, and partnerships will be key in bridging the knowledge gap and providing farmers with the necessary support to maximize their crop productivity.
This blog post was made possible through the sponsorship of NASTAG and Diamond FM, who share the common goal of promoting sustainable agricultural practices and empowering farmers. Their commitment to advancing the agricultural sector in Ghana is commendable, and their support for initiatives like the Agric Dialogue Programme is instrumental in fostering knowledge exchange and driving positive change in the farming community.
Together, let us continue to strive for holistic agricultural development, where the adoption of certified seeds and the proper usage of complementary inputs go hand in hand, ensuring improved livelihoods and food security for farmers across Ghana.
