‘MIISIM DEMO’ hits Northern Region as 1000s protest against unbearable economic conditions in Ghana

Collation of Progressive Forces in the Greater Tamale of the Northern Region on Saturday September 3, 2022, led a demonstration in Tamale, to protest against what it described as ‘unbearable economic conditions’ in the country.

The demonstration dubbed “MIISIM DEMO”, saw some members of other political parties such as the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), People’s National Convention (PNC), market women and other artisans joining the protest to drum home their concerns as they marched through the principal streets of Tamale the Northern Regional Capital.

Some of the placards held by the demonstrating political activists read,” MR. PREZ STOP THE SUBTLE TYRANNY MOST GHANAIANS ARE AFRAID TO SPEAK OUT FEAR OF LOSING THIER LIVES”, “78.9% DEBT TO GDP IS A COUNTRY IN BANKRUPCY”, “MR PREZ YOUR FINANCIAL MINISTER IS THE WORST GHANA HAS EVER HAD”, “GHANAIANS ARE SUFFERING”, “MR PREZ FARMERS CAN’T BUY FERTILIZER, “STOP STEALING OUR MONEY, among others.

Convener of the group Professor Jasper Abambia, who led the demonstration, indicated that, “how immoral can a government be to use money that is meant to address such a serious pandemic on these private purposes so that is one of them”.

“Ghanaians are finding it difficult to make ends meet due to the hard economic policies of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). We don’t know where this current government is leading the country to, the nation needs to be rescued”, he added.

The Northern Regional Secretary of the NDC Mohammed Abdul Salam, took a swipe at the Nana Akufo-Addo-led Administration for failing to deliver on its campaign promises, saying “Nana Akufo and Dr Mahamadu Bawumia; please we can see that the two of you are even suffering. So, what you need to do now is to peacefully resign so that Ghanaians can find within the constitution to find a new government to govern the country”.

Some of the demonstrators who also share their frustration, said “the rising cost of living, arbitrary increase in utility bills and taxes had made life uncomfortable for us”.
