Mion Assembly and partners hold 3 day Sanitation Business Fair in the District.

The Mion District Assembly (MDA) in collaboration with UNICEF and other development partners have launch a three day sanitation business trade fair in the District.

The purposed of the fair is to create a platform for knowledge sharing and ideas generation for sanitation businesses in the District. It is also designed to showcase the sanitation business potentials in the area.

Addressing the chiefs and staff of Assembly to launch the three day event, the District chief executive of Mion, Mohammed Hashim, stated the Mion Assembly remained among the top four ranking in the northern region’s bi – annual sanitation review league table.

He said the district is poised to attained open defecation free by December 2019, adding, the district had trained 90 communities Technical volunteers and 30 Latrine artisans to facilitate the supply of quality latrine constructions services to the people of the area.

The DCE, also mentioned that, the District had 146 communities out of the total number over 179 communities that had been declared open defecation free.

Mohamed Hashim said the District though its efforts regarding the CLTS programme has been selected by UNICEF as one of the beneficiaries of the District pilot Sanitation market program which is aimed at creating funding opportunities for the people to access household toilet.

The Mion DCE rallied the support of traditional and opinion leaders in the District to making Sanitation their concern.

 “My appeal to opinion leaders, chiefs and religious leaders from the district is for you to make sanitation your business. We can all do this by using our various forms of authority and influence, to advice people towards keeping household latrines and observing the social norms” he noted. 

Mrs. Alhassan Salma, a representative from the Northern regional coordinating council commended management of Mion District assembly for organizing the fair for the first time and urged households in the District to seize the opportunity of the available tailored soft loans to construct toilet facilities.

This, she said, would address the issue of open defecation and also enhance healthy living among residents.
