TaMA to enact laws to guide activities of Taskforce fighting Illicit Drugs and Substance Abuse in Tamale

The Presiding Member of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly (TaMA), Honorable Abukari Issah, has announced that the assembly would soon enact a specific bylaw to guide the activities of the local taskforce in combating the issue of illicit drugs and substance abuse within the metropolis.

According to him, the management of the assembly appreciate the efforts of the taskforce hence they intended to introduce a bylaw to reinforce their work.

Honorable Issah made this known when members of the taskforce addressed management of the assembly at the second ordinary meeting of the 4th session of the 8th assembly on Wednesday September 6, 2023.

According to him, the leadership of the assembly led by MAYOR SULE SALIFU, has agreed to give all the necessary support to the fight against abuse of drugs and other substances in the metropolis. “We have agreed as a house to support them in all their activities that have to do with fighting in any matter related to drugs and substance abuse”.

“We the leadership of the Metropolis are worried about the surge of substance and drug abuse among the youth within the metropolis and even if it means that we should channel all our resources in to combate this issue, we will do that as a metropolis. We need to curb this menace among the youth because they are the future leaders in this metropolis,” he said.

It would be recalled that, as part of effort to get rid of illicit drugs and substance abuse within the greater Tamale, some youth in Aboabo electoral area of the Tamale Metropolis on June 2023, set up a local taskforce dubbed “Rescue Mission on the Illicit Drugs in Dagbon (RMIDD)” to apprehend persons suspected to be selling illicit drugs and other substance.

The taskforce for the past few months had commenced their operations within the Tamale Metropolis and has since apprehended several people selling illicit drugs.

Their operation has been endorsed by the stakeholders, opinion leaders and traditional authority within the greater Tamale after they made their intention known to them.
