NEDCo/VRA disobeys Northern Regional Minister Order to restore power at Koblemahagu

Management of Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) and Volta River Authority (VRA) has declined restoring power at Koblemahagu despite order by the Northern Regional Minister Alhaji Alhassan Shaibu Saani.

The Northern Regional Minister gave the order after a crunch meeting with the leadership of NEDCo/VRA on Monday 14th March, 2022.

The management of NEDCo/VRA on Tuesday 8th March, 2022, disconnected Koblemahagu community a suburb of the Tamale Metropolis from the national grid following the violent attack on their colleagues by some residents of the community.

One of the field officers sustained severe machete wounds in the attack, when they visited the community for a routine monitoring exercise.

The power distribution company on Wednesday 9th March 2022 also announced the withdrawal of their field services until further notice and this had since affected several parts of the Tamale Metropolis.

NEDCo/VRA took the decision not to move into communities to work on transformers, power lines and other electrical faults following threats on their lives. This is the second time NEDCo/VRA had took a decision to withdraw their services within the Tamale Metropolis and its adjoined communities.

However, after several meetings with the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) and the Northern Regional Minister, and NEDCo on Monday 14th March, 2022. Some partial agreement was that NEDCo should restore power back to Koblemahagu and work on other fault powerlines but management of NEDCo/VRA after the meeting are yet to adhere to the minister directives.

Meanwhile, assemblyman for Koblemahagu electoral area, Honorable Mohammed Ahmed Babamu, speaking on Diamond FM Siasa Saha – a political talk show, expressed his displeasure about the attitude of the management of NEDCo/VRA towards the order by the Northern Regional Minister.

“I was there when the minister asked them to restore power to our electoral area but they have refused to do that”, he lamented.
