N/R: Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations held International Day of Persons-With-Disabilities

The Northern Regional branch of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations (GFD) on Wednesday January 4, 2024, held the 2023 International Day of Persons with disabilities with a call on the government to step up efforts to improve the lives of persons with disability (PWD), in the country.

The day, which is celebrated annually on December 3, was set aside by the United Nations in 1992 to promote the understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disability.

It is also seeking to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of social, political, economic and culture.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “United in action to rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with and by persons with disability”.

Speaking on the theme, the Northern Regional Coordinator of Special Education, Madam Mildred Mantamia, indicated that, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), required international cooperation hence it is prudent of the global community to stand and unite to share knowledge, resources, and best practices to address the unique challenges faced by persons with disability in deferent regions.

“The key to success lies in collaboration, government, NGOs, businesses, and individuals must come together to formulate and implement policies that cater for the diverse needs of persons with disability. By actively involving them in decision making processes, we can ensure that the solutions are tailored to their unique perspective,” she said.

“Through united action, we can rescue the potential within each other individually and collectively achieve the Sustainable Development Goal,” she added.

In her welcoming remarks, the Northern Regional Presidents of (GFD) Madam Abubakari Sahadatu Nimatu, said the world Disability Day was supposed to be held on December 3, 2023, but due to financial constraint the leadership shifted the day to January 4, 2024.

“This is the day we normally come together to deliberate issues affecting our daily activities and the way forward, but lack of funding is affecting us in organizing such an important day and want the government to channel his attention to this issue.”

The Chairman for the occasion, Mr. Seidu Chantima, in his remarks urged the leadership of the Northern Regional branch of (GDF) not to relent on its efforts but rather work closely with all members and SCOs for the betterment of the organization.
