Ghana should be concern about the increase of frequency in earthquakes- GGSA Director

The Director General of the Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA), Mr. Isaac Kuuwan Mwinbelle, has stated that the country should be more concerned about the increase of frequency of the recent earthquakes that have hit some parts of the country.

According to him though the country had not experienced a frequent earthquake event, there was the need for the nation to be prepared adequately to prevent any devastating earthquake events in the country.

Mr. Mwinbelle who made the call said, it is prudent for Ghanaians to begin constructing earthquake resistance structures as part of measures for any possible earth tremors in the country.

“What we should be concern about is the frequency of the earthquake event. Over the years the frequency is increasing, and that is the worry. That is what we should be concern about, and begin to take steps and measures which will help us to be more prepared to construct structures that can withstand earthquake event should we have a major event occurring in the country”, he explained further.

Speaking at the media engagement in Tamale, he said the authority has lined up a series of activities to sensitize the Ghanaian public on natural disaster preparedness and management to reduce impact on such events.

The engagement was to brief the media on the mandate of the GGSA to help journalists understand the issues to enable them to sensitize the general public on the duties of the GGSA.

Mr Mwinbelle, noted it is the mandate of the Authority to advise the state on geo-scientific, geo-hazard and land planning. It serves as a national repository for geo-scientific information generated by the public and private entities such as mining and mineral exploration companies.

On his part, the Head of Seismology Unit of the GGSA, Mr. Nicholas Opoku, equipped journalists with knowledge in earthquake disaster response.

He enacted a perfect demonstration of steps that one must take in the event of earthquakes and other natural disasters that fall within the jurisdiction of the GGSA.
