Motor Traffic and Transport Division MTTD engages stakeholders on enforcement of ‘Traffitech-GH’

The Motor Traffic and Transport Division (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service as part of measures to implement automated system called Traffitech-GH, has on Wednesday August 30, 2023, sensitized stakeholders in Tamale on ‘Traffitech-GH’ aimed at reducing accidents and carnage on the roads.

The objective of the technology is to increase compliance of road traffic laws and regulations to reduce road traffic crashes and injuries.

Traffitech-Ghana is an automated system developed by the Ghana Police Service to enforce road traffic laws and regulations to improve road safety in the country. The system uses cameras and sensors to automatically take a picture and or video of vehicles that flout road traffic laws and regulations such as speeding and jumping of red light.

The pictures and or videos recorded of the offence are automatically transmitted to a back office for validation and issuance of a notification by SMS to the vehicle owner for payment.

Speaking on behalf of the Director General of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service and the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Northern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Duuti Tuaruka, indicated that the implementation of the Traffitech-GH and the Police through the MTTD will deploy traffic enforcement cameras to detect, apprehend and prosecute traffic offenders.

He said the system would also levy automatic penalties to increase deterrence and compliance with road traffic laws and regulations.

“TraffiTech-GH is important to maintain social order within the communities with the view of promoting a high sense of public trust in the police, facilitating law abiding behaviors, fostering compliance and cooperation at the same time, increasing the rate of detecting road traffic offences”.

DCOP Duuti Tuaruka said, the sensitization intends to offer opportunity for the public to understand and appreciate the project, and also make inputs taking into consideration stakeholder concerns including transport operators, vehicle owners, drivers, motor riders, CSOs, media.

In his PowerPoint presentation, the Traffitech-GH coordinator, Chief Superintendent Alexander Kwaku Obeng said pictures or videos recorded of the offence are automatically transmitted back to the office for validation, and issuance of a notification by SMS to the vehicle owner for payment.

He noted that, other traffic offences that would be enforced under Traffitech-Ghana are expired road worthiness certificate, wrongful overtaking, non-use of seatbelts, use of expired licenses, driving with an uninsured vehicle, and abuse of siren among others.

He stressed that, the consequences of defaulting on the payment of Traffitech-Ghana would lead to an additional 1% penalty on the original Traffitech-Ghana fine for each day of default after 14 days payment period.

The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, is doing it with the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Driver and Vehicle Licensing DVLA, National Insurance Commission (NIC) among others.
