Chiefs of Gukpegu paid a surprise visit at Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH)

A powerful traditional authority from the Gukpegu Traditional area led by the Chief of Choggu, Naa Alhassan Mahamadu on behalf of the Paramount Chief of the Gukpegu traditional area, Naa Alhassan Abdulai, on Thursday May 4, 2023, paid a surprised visit to the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH).

The purpose of the visit was to get first hand information of issues hampering the activities of the facility and the way forward.

The delegation includes Chief of Gukpegu-Tua, Naa Abu Sufian, Chief of Wurishe, Naa Alhaji Adam, Chief of Choggu, Naa Alhassan Mahamadu, Secretary of Gukpe Naa, Mr. Mohammed Rashad among others.

At a short interaction with the management of the facility, the Secretary of Gukpe Naa, Mr. Mohammed Rashad who speaks on behalf of the chiefs indicated that, the paramount Chief of the Gukpegu traditional area and his Divisional Chiefs are not happy about the recent negative information about the facility hence their visit.

“The chief has asked me on behalf of my chiefs to inform you that a lot of stories had gone far and wide in relation to TTH for a bad reason, and any time we hear such stories, we are not happy as traditional authorities, especially whose land the facility is situated”, he said.

Mr. Mohammed Rashad, further narrated that, “those days any time a story come out, we just look at it (TTH) in general. But it is not so, because the chief believed that the entire TTH would not be doing something wrong. May be a department or an individual. Therefore, he said we should inform you that, this time around whenever there is a problem we will not say TTH. We will want to find out which department is the problem emanating from. So that, we will engage the head of that department to find out what happen. What can we do to punctuate this kind of problems? What are we doing to enhance the good things they have been doing. All these are the reason why we are here”.

Mohammed Rashad while speaking on behalf of the chiefs also call on the leadership of the facility to ensure the good deeds about the hospital are put in the public domain.

In his remarks, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) Dr, Adam Atiku, while enumerating challenges facing the facility thus, appealed to the traditional authorities to support the leadership of the facility for effective health delivery.

Dr. Adam Atiku, in his remarks also urged media practitioners in the region to also verify from the leadership of the Hospital before airing issues in relation to the facility.

Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) is the biggest referral centre, serving the five regions of the North, and some of the neighbouring countries like Burkina-Faso, Togo, Mali, and the rest.

But for the past few years, the facility has been on the news headlines for the bad reasons. Some patients and residents within the region are unhappy with the services rendered at the hospital.
