You’re an enemy to the State if you’re against E-Levy- NCA Director

The Northern Regional Director of National Communications Authority (NCA), Abukari Iddrisu Alooma, has labeled those opposing the implementation of electronic transaction bill (E- levy) as “enemies” to the nation.

According to him, “any body including the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who is against the E-levy is an enemy of this state”.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP), Northern Regional Secretary hopeful, made these comments on Diamond FM Siasa Saha a Dagbani Political Talk Show with Abdulai Abdul-Gafaru on Thursday 03, February, 2022.

The controversial E-Levy has been met with a strong opposition by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and many Ghanaians also kicked against it; stressing that it will only place an extra burden on their finances.

The 1.75% tax on all digital financial transactions is one of the main proposals of the government in the 2022 budget presented to parliament by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

Meanwhile, despite the opposition NDC rejection, the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta still maintained that, government can only sustain the economic growth through the Electronic Transaction Levy in the country.

According to him, the e-levy will be the most viable means of generating revenue and sustaining economic growth, as other options such as increasing petrol prices, among others, tend to have an adverse impact on Ghanaians.

The Minister however justified the e-levy, sayingit was introduced to broaden the tax base and deepen democracy.

“How do you deepen democracy if you do not pay taxes? We came back with several reasons to broaden tax base and increase revenue. The payment of taxes in Ghana is awfully low compared to our neighbours. We need to cure that.” He added.
