Tamale Intechange: “Contractor has carried out a shoddy work”- Assemblyman Alleges

Assemblyman for the Victory Cinema electoral area of the Tamale Metropolis, Honorable Osman Amadu YariNaa, has vowed to lead residents within the Greater Tamale Metropolis to stop the contractor working on the Tamale interchange from completing the work on scheduled date, should he failed to fix their concern they raised with regard to the ongoing work at the project site.

According to him, the contractor, not only carried out a shoddy work on the project, but also changed the original plan of the project that was shown to the chiefs and people in the Northern Region.

He indicated that, all the auxiliary facilities and other components under the project had all change at the blindside of the residents within the Tamale Metropolis.

The Victory Cinema electoral area assemblyman, made these claims during a recent radio interview on Diamond FM Siasa Saha with Abdulai Abdul Gafaru, a Dagbani political talk show, on Wednesday, February 02, 2022 saying his outfit has laid several complains to the contractor and the Northern Regional Urban Road Department about the change of plan of the project and the kind of work being executed at the site, but all fall to death ears, hence the decision.

“The initial plan was that, they were supposed to demolish houses closer to the road, which they had engage the landlords of these houses, and also construct a dual road within the central Mosque to the main Taxi Rank, but all this had not happened”.

“Currently they are constructing a single lane from Central Mosque to the main taxi rank. Meanwhile, the original plan wasn’t that way”, he laments.

“We have been battling with flood any time it rains most especially my electoral area (Victory Cinema Electoral Area). But if you see the kind of drainage they are constructing, it is not good. In fact, they have changed the project completely. And, if we allow them to complete and commission it, we will have a problem in the near future”, he stressed.

Amadu Yarinaa who recently led a group of residents within the Tamale Metropolis to the project site, said “we will not allow the contractor to complete the work not to talk of commissioning it in March if they failed to address our concerns”.

The Victory Cinema electoral area assemblyman, while raising these concerns, also express worry over the attitude of traditional authorities and other opinion leaders within the Northern Region towards government projects in the Region

“All these things are happening, because our chiefs and opinion leaders failed to monitor the contractor. My outfit had police the project, but because I wasn’t getting any support from any one, I had to stop”, he said.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Roads and Highways, Dr Amoako Atta during his recent visit in the region, announced that the Tamale Interchange will officially be opened to traffic in the middle of March 2022 to help ease traffic.

Construction of the interchange which commenced in 2019 was expected to complete in December 2021, but due to unintended delays and interferences, the deadline could not be met.

The Tamale Interchange is one of many projects being executed in Ghana as part of the $2 billion China Synohydro deal to enhance traffic flow in the region.
