Calls for dismissal of Tolon District Hospital Medical Superintendent are uncalled for- Dr Osman Abdulai

The medical superintendent of the Tolon District Hospital, Dr Osman Abdulai, has rubbished reports calling on the government to dismiss top management of the facility.

Dr. Osman Abdulai’s response follows a press statement issued by a group called Concerned residents of Tolon accusing the top management of the hospital of corruption and mismanagement.

According to him, the allegations issued by the group was untrue because the convener of the group had failed to give details on the issues they have raised hence people should disregard it.

Speaking exclusively to diamondfmonline.com to set the records straight regarding the activities and operations of the facility, Dr. Osman described the actions by the group led by the Assemblyman for Nayilifong electoral area who is also a Presiding Member for Tolon District Assembly, Mohammed Abdul Somed Chantiwuni, as “unfortunate”.

“It is unfortunate that the assemblyman takes that direction, without doing a proper investigation or sitting with us to enquire on the issues he had levelled against the management. I am pretty sure if he had done that, he would have dropped all the allegations he has tabled.”

Dr. Osman, while disputing the claims, indicated that services within the hospital had increased since its operationalization on January 4, 2022.

He said the Out Patient Department (OPD) in the hospital recorded 25000 patients, while over 12000 patients were admitted for treatment.

Dr Osman also mentioned that, the one and half year-old hospital since its operationalization, had done 2000 deliveries of babies. “Out of the number we have done a little over 500 Caesarean Sections,” he added.

“So, if you call this mismanagement, I don’t know what proper management would have been like”, he said.

He said his outfit together with other medical staff are on a course to offer quality health care to the people of Tolon and its surrounding communities. “I am not the only doctor in this hospital, I have a residency doctor who is stationed in this hospital, then I also have medical assistant who is also supporting. We run 24 hours duty and we have a duty roster and at any point in time the medical staff are available to see a patient,” he narrates.

Dr. Osman also highlighted some challenges facing the facility including seed capital to run the hospital, water, consumables and a utility vehicle, supporting staff, among others, “but despite all these difficulties we are still putting in our best to ensure quality health care is delivered.

It would be recalled that, on August 19, 2023, a group calling itself Concerned Residents of Tolon led by Assemblyman for Nayilifong electoral area issued a statement calling on the government to immediately dismiss Dr. Osman Abdulai and other top management of the facility.

The group in their presser accused the management of corruption and mismanagement. Among the top officers whom the concerned residents demand axed from the hospital include Dr. Osman Abdulai- Medical Superintendent, Madam Iddrisu Hairiya- Accountant of the hospital, Mr. Issah Aminu- Store keeper and the Administrator, Adam Zenabu.

They say the continued stay of office by these aforementioned individuals will jeopardize the healthcare delivery service at the hospital, adding that the abuse of power by the top officials is destroying public trust in the district health facility.
