MP for Kumbungu intensifies education on Climate Change in Kumbung District

The Member of Parliament for Kumbungu Constituency Dr. Hamza Adam, in collaboration with his partners, have intensified education on Climate Change within Kumbungu District in the Northern Region.

The MP who doubles as Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Committee on Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, as part of activities on Saturday December 10, 2022, organized a community sensitization durbar on Climate Change at Gbullung in the Kumbungu District.

The sensitization durbar was aimed at creating awareness on climate change and its effects on economy and farming activities in the country. The durbar also necessitated by the delapidating effects of Climate Change on our lives and livelihoods, and the need to provide expert advice to the people to help mitigate and address environmental concerns in the country.

In his addressed Honorable Hamza Adam said climate change was to be blamed for the decline in rainfall in the country.

He attributed certain human activities such as bush fire, indiscriminate felling of trees, incessant application of inorganic fertilizer and sand winning as the cause of the climate change, adding this consequential change in the climate leads to global warming, drought and poor agricultural yields.

Honorable Dr Hamza, thus entreats the Chiefs and people of Gbulung and its adjoined communities to desist from burning the bush, and indiscriminate felling of trees within their localities. He also urged community members to shift towards organic fertilizer application, and stop farming at the river banks.

“These attitudinal changes, as established, would protect the environment and water bodies, eventually preventing the destruction of the ozone layer and the resultant global warming,” he noted.

There were other speakers including Country Director of PolicyLink, Mr. Yunus Abdullah and representative from the Environmental Protection Agency, Mr. Hafiz who all admonished the chief and people of Gbullung and surrounding communities, to form Environmental Protection groups which will primarily be focused on afforestation and reforestation, especially along the river banks.

The Chief of Gbulung Naa Ya-Musah Sumani and the Regent of Dalung traditional area Mahama Adam, were all very elated at the eye opener offered them by the distinguished speakers, and promised to start implementing the environmental protection measures at their respective communities.

They have therefore appealed to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to provide them with trees to immediately and aggressively restore the forest cover of ‘our dear’ Kumbungu constituency.
