LEGON LIONS CLUB extend eye testing and donation of glasses to Gbanyamli residents

Members of the LEGON LIONS CLUB in Accra, has held an eye testing and donation of glasses to the Gbanyamni community in Sanarigu Municipality of the Northern Region.

The eye screening exercise attracted community members including the aged, women as well with children living with eye challenges.

More than 300 persons were targeted and having been attended to by the medical team from the Tamale Teaching Hospital, some were given medicated lenses while those with severe condition were referred for further medical help.

Past president of Legon Lions Club and leader for the exercise, Lion Dr. Daniel Baidoo, in an interaction with Diamond News stated that “Lionism” was an act of service and October having been set aside by Lions Internationally for what is dubbed :Eye First” or eye servces, they chose to travel up north in response to the call.

“We chose Tamale because of many are disadvantaged here and as a University community, we are responding to the need and with support from others including a Ghanaian LIONs member in the United State who donated the 200 spectacles.

“Apart from helping with sight, we also aim at building a LIONs club here and revamp the spirit of “lionism” by bringing the awareness and bringing likeminded people who are interested in service – using their time, talents and other resources,” Lion Baidoo added.

A Principal Nursing officer at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, Madam Aisha Mohamed who led the medical team said most of the cases screened were reflective errors and cataract.

She added that the majority of the adult population screened were having cataract in the early stages, but for others that they needed further examination, they are being referred to the TTH for treatment and surgeries.

Nurse Aisha implored residents to seek early treatment with their sight challenges to avoid blindness.

Some Gbanayamli residents and beneficiaries of the eye testing and free medical lenses expressed their gratitude to the LEGON LIONS club for coming to their aid by helping to restore their visions.
