GPRTU calls off strike, set to meet presidency today

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has called off it strike action after an intervention from the presidency.

Leadership in a statement said “the Union has been invited to the Presidency during the course of the day”.

In the early hours of Monday, December 6, 2021, thousands of commuters across the country were stranded at various bus terminals owing to the sit-down strike by the Commercial Transport Operators.

But the GPRTU in their statement said “the intended strike action which was schedule to take effect today Monday 6th December, 2021 has been suspended”.

“We therefore entreat our cherished members to go back to their normal duties”, the statement added.

Background

The Coalition of Commercial Transport Operators had directed all commercial transport operators to begin a sit-down strike from Monday, December 6th, 2021.

Their action, was to demand for the removal of some five taxes contained in the 2022 budget statement by government.

The five taxes and levies are- the Price Stabilization and Recovery Levy, the Special Petroleum Tax, Energy Sector Levy, Energy Debt Recovery Levy, and the Sanitation and Pollution Levy from the pump price of petroleum products.

Mr Ibrahim Musah, Executive Secretary, of the Joint Association of Port Transport Unions, (JAPTU) Ghana has indicated that the Coalition had also directed the leadership of all its affiliates to close their stations from Monday to ensure full compliance.
