Family announces the death of Honorable Mark Woyongo a former Minister and founder of Diamond FM

Honorable Mark Owen Woyongo, Founder and Chief Executive Officer [CEO] of Makenba Broadcasting Company Limited, operators of Diamond 93.7 FM in Tamale is reported dead.

Honorable Woyongo served as a former Defense Minister and Member of Parliament (MP) for Navrongo Central.

The Woyongo Family head, Mr. Awini Zinge, confirmed the death in a statement  on Thursday. Mr Woyongo who died at age 74, also served under late President Atta Mills as Upper East Regional Minister in 2009.

He died on Wednesday, January 17 at the Bank of Ghana Hospital in Accra.

Mark Woyongo was MP for Navrongo Central from 2012 to 2016. In 2013, he was nominated by President Mahama for the position of Minister for Defence. He later went on becoming the Interior Minister in 2014 and will be remembered for his expression “Violence begets violence.”

Hon Woyongo announced his retirement from politics, disclosing in December 2016 that he would not contest any political position again.

Prior to entering politics he had retired as a Deputy Director at the Information Service Department, Ministry of Information, in charge of Administration.

Late Woyongo, a trained journalist while in public service, had earlier served in Ghana’s High Commission in the United Kingdom as Information officer for a number of years until 2001 when his family returned to Ghana.

Mr. Woyongo established Diamond FM in 2002, as the premier private commercial radio station in Northern Ghana and engaged journalism colossus, the late Edward Ameyibor as the station’s first General Manager.

Having left active politics he went to serious farming until his health began to fall him. Hon. Woyongo was last seen in public during the funeral of his late son, Kenneth Woyongo who was laid to rest barely two months ago.

The staff here and management of Diamond FM pray for a peaceful repose of Hon. Woyongo’s soul.
