3 Days Ultimatum: Cease Dakpema talking-drums, hand it over to Yaa Naa – Chiefs to REGSEC, METSEC

The traditional rulers of Gulkpegu, Sagnarigu, Banvum, Lamashegu, Nantong, Zangbalin and beyond, have given the Tamale Metropolitan Security Council (METSEC) and Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) a three working days ultimatum to ceased the talking drums from the Tamale Dakpema palace and hand it over to the overlord of Dagbon.

According to the chiefs that, they will advise themselves if the METSEC and REGSEC failed to implement their request by taken the talking drums from the Tamale Dakpema palace latest by Wednesday 3rd March, 2022.

The chiefs at a press briefing at the fore court of Gulkpe Naa palace on Saturday 26th February, 2022, also warn the local gon gon beaters to desist from performing at the Tamale Dakpema palace or face their wrath.

“We are also telling the local gon gon beaters to desist from performing at the Tamale Dakpema palace, or we will handle them on our own way, and they know what it means”, they said.

It will be recalled that Diamondfmonline.com on February 23, 2022 reported that, the overlord of Dadgon His Majesty Ndan Yaa-Naa Abukari II, through the Dagbon Traditional Council, has clarified that Tamale Dakpema Bawa Fuseini is not a recognized chief within the traditional system of Dagbon but a Fetish Priest otherwise known as “Tindana”, hence should be addressed as such.

The overlord of Dagbon in the letter dated 20th February, 2022 with reference DTC/TD/7/22/02 indicated that, the Tamale Dakpema is not a chief and should not be treated as such, and that he should not be invited to a public function involving chiefs unless for the performing of his traditional functions as a fetish priest.

“The Dakpema should not use two talking drums at his palace”, the overlord indicated.

However, according to the chiefs despite this clarification and restrictions by the overlord of Dagbon, Tamale Dakpema, still hold himself as chief and performed chiefly activities by playing talking drums at his palace.

Secretary to the Paramount Chief of the Gulkpegu Traditional Area, Mohammed Rashad who addressed the media on behalf of the chiefs, stated, “so haven’t written the response to the METSEC , we are yet to see how they are going to implement the response of Ndan Yaa-Naa over who the Dakpema is. He has asked that, he should stop chiefly activities at his palace , but he has refused and still performed chiefly activities. By these, we are calling on METSEC and REGSEC as a matter of urgency that, from Monday to Wednesday, we requested that, they should go and pick up the talking drums from Dakpema palace and hand it over to the overlord of Dagbon. We are given them three working days”, he stressed.

Mohammed Rashad in a statement on behalf of the chiefs, also call on the security within the Tamale Metropolis to as a matter of possibility, arrest the youth that behave rudely towards Ndan Yaa-Naa on social media. The secretary of Gulkpe Naa, while calling on the security, also call on the youth within the Dagbon traditional area to stay calm and not take the law into their hands.

There has been seeming confusion between some Paramount Chiefs and the Tamale Dakpema over the latter holding himself publicly as the paramount Chief of Tamale.

The situation has caused tension within the region which many believe if not managed properly could affect the current peace in Dagbon.
