Promoting Quality Seeds: Diamond FM and NASTAG Join Forces for Improved Crop Productivity

In the quest to enhance agricultural productivity and empower farmers, Diamond FM, a renowned radio station committed to agricultural development, recently partnered with the National Seed Trade Association of Ghana (NASTAG).

Together, they embarked on a mission to disseminate crucial information about the significance of using quality seeds in farming practices. On Tuesday, June 20, Diamond FM’s flagship program, the Diamond Agriculture Dialogue, hosted by Dr. Zakaria Issahaku, provided a platform for NASTAG, represented by its member, the Savannah Agricultural Research Institute SARI of CSIR, to shed light on the importance of quality seeds for farmers.

On the Importance of Quality Seeds: During the engaging dialogue, Dr. Theophilus Kwabla Tengey, an esteemed plant breeder, captivated listeners as he delved into the intricacies of quality seeds. He emphasized that the use of quality seeds is vital for improving crop productivity, increasing yields, and ensuring sustainable agriculture. Dr. Tengey highlighted the various classes of seeds available in the market and educated farmers on the essential qualities to consider when purchasing seeds for planting.

On the discussions about understanding Seed Quality: One of the key takeaways from the discussion was the significance of conducting a germination test when purchasing seeds. Dr. Tengey emphasized that farmers must be proactive in ensuring the seeds they acquire have high germination rates, as this directly influences the success of their farming endeavors. He explained the simple yet effective methods farmers can employ to determine seed quality and viability, empowering them to make informed decisions and optimize their yields.

Promoting Feedback Channels: Dr. Tengey also emphasized the importance of establishing robust feedback mechanisms to address any concerns related to seed quality. Farmers were encouraged to reach out to NASTAG and the Plant Protection and Regulatory Services Directorate (PPRSD) to provide feedback on their experiences with seeds purchased and to seek guidance or support when needed. By fostering open communication and engagement, the partnership aims to ensure that farmers’ concerns are heard and addressed effectively.

The collaboration between Diamond FM and NASTAG marks a significant step towards promoting the use of quality seeds among farmers. By leveraging the platform of the Diamond Agriculture Dialogue, vital information about seed quality and its impact on crop productivity was disseminated to a wide audience. The partnership aims to empower farmers with knowledge, equipping them to make informed decisions and adopt best practices in seed selection.

Moving forward, Diamond FM and NASTAG are committed to continuing their collaboration and fostering dialogue on topics that contribute to agricultural development. The dissemination of information about quality seeds is expected to have a positive ripple effect, leading to increased adoption and improved agricultural productivity in Ghana.

Farmers are encouraged to embrace the use of quality seeds and take advantage of the feedback channels provided by NASTAG and PPRSD. Together, we can drive positive change in the agricultural sector and ensure a sustainable future for farmers and the nation as a whole.
