President Nana Akuffo Addo to name the Navrongo UDS campus of the UDS after the late C.K. Tedam, seemed not to have been received well by many Ghanaians

The announcement by the President Nana Akuffo Addo to name the Navrongo UDS campus after the late Chairman of the Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), C.K. Tedam, seemed not to have been received well by many Ghanaians.

The President, at the state Burial Mass of the late founding father of NPP, CK Tedam at Paga in the Kassena Nankana West District over the weekend, announced that Navorongo UDS campus would be name after the late statesman.

However The president’s decision has not only provoked many reactions and debates in both traditional and social media, with some are questioning the relevance of naming the school after the late C.K TEDAM who was mostly seen as a political party figure. Others have also said it was befitting considering C.K Tedam’s role in establishment of the university.

Joining in the criticism of the president whose government in April had announced that four public universities would have a name hanged after the newly drafted Public University Bill is adopted and passed by Parliament without any amendments, is the minority side of parliament.

MP and Ranking member of on the Education committee in parliament, Peter Nokyo speaking on the issue on Diamond FM power drive, said the decision is yet to be put before parliament, hence the president had no right to rename the school without the approval of parliament.

Speaking on the same programme, a lecturer at UDS, Dr Michael Ayamga expressed worry over the recent plans by Government to rename public monument in the country. He said government should have done broader consultation before taking such decisions to avoid problems in the future.
