Media Freedom: Does the NMC still protect media freedom in Ghana?- Alhassan Suhuyini

The Member of Parliament for Tamale North Constituency, Alhaji Alhassan S. Suhuyini, has appeal to Parliament’s Business Committee, to invite the Media Commission, through the Information Minister to brief Parliament House on the recent happenings in the media front across the country.

According to him, the increase of state involvement in the harassment and detention of some media personnel in the country is worry hence, his call.

Alhassan Suhuyini while expressing his dismay about the arrest of some media practitioners in the country, indicated that in less than two weeks, three (3) Media personnel have been arrested by the state agencies.

“I wish to appeal to the Business Committee to invite the National Media Commission (NMC) through the Minister of Information to brief this house on the development on the media front, especially in relation to the arrest and detention of Mensah Thompson, Bobie Ansah and whether or not the NMC is still in the business of protecting press freedom in this country”, he stated.

The Tamale North legislature made this appeal on the floor of parliament on Friday 11 February, 2022, saying “it is important for parliament to be briefed by the National Media Commission on the latest development on the media landscape in the country”, he said.

“This is especially important, given the precarious nature of the sub-region and the question whether or not our democracy is been observed”.

“Mr. speaker, I think it is important that the business committee makes accommodation for the house to be briefed by next week by the NMC through the Minister of Information”, he appealed.

Meanwhile, the Accra FM’s presenter, Kwabena Bobie Ansah who was arrested on Thursday night 10 February, 2022. has been granted a GH¢50,000 bail.

He has been charged with the publication of false news and offensive conduct.

While the Executive Director of ASEPA, Mensah Thompson, pleaded not guilty to two criminal charges of publication of false news and offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace, and he was subsequently been admitted to a bail sum of GH¢50,000 with two sureties.
