How You Can Naturally Keep Mosquitoes Away From Yourself

Mosquitoes are pesky insects that can ruin a pleasant summer evening. Not only do they cause itchy bites, but they can also transmit dangerous diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, and Zika virus. While there are many chemical insecticides available on the market, they can be harmful to both humans and the environment. Fortunately, there are natural ways to keep mosquitoes away from yourself and your family.

1. Use mosquito nets

According to MedicalToday, If you’re camping or sleeping outside, use a mosquito net to protect yourself from bites. Make sure the net is properly secured around your bed or sleeping area.

2. Wear protective clothing

Mosquitoes are attracted to dark colors and tight-fitting clothing. Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing to reduce your chances of getting bitten. If you’re planning to spend time outdoors in the evening, wear long sleeves and pants to cover as much skin as possible.

3. Use natural repellents

There are many natural ingredients that can repel mosquitoes. Essential oils such as peppermint, eucalyptus, and tea tree oil can be mixed with a carrier oil such as coconut oil and applied to your skin. You can also make a natural mosquito spray by mixing equal parts of water and witch hazel with a few drops of essential oil.

4. Get rid of standing water

Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, so it’s important to get rid of any standing water around your home. Empty any containers that collect water, such as flower pots, bird baths, and gutters. If you have a pool, make sure it’s properly chlorinated and covered when not in use.

5. Use mosquito-repelling plants

Certain plants, such as citronella, lavender, basil, and lemon balm, are natural mosquito repellents. Plant them in your garden or keep them in pots on your patio or balcony. Not only do they help keep mosquitoes away, but they also add a pleasant aroma to your outdoor space.

6. Use fans

Mosquitoes are weak fliers and don’t like strong winds. Use a fan to create a breeze in your outdoor space or in your bedroom at night to keep mosquitoes away.

7. Keep your home clean

Mosquitoes are attracted to dirty and cluttered spaces. Keep your home clean and tidy to reduce the number of mosquitoes that enter your home. Make sure your windows and doors have screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering.
