Choggu roundabout renovation work was shoddy – Urban Roads Director.

The Northern Regional Director of Urban Roads Ing, Darku has revealed that, his outfit was not consulted before renovation works were done on the now dilapidated Choggu roundabout.

He said contractors who worked on the roundabout lacked the technical knowledge resulting in shoddy work that has blocked the drainage system within the roundabout.

Currently, parts of the roundabout can best be described as a pond that collects rain water anytime it rains.

The Choggu roundabout is one of the many renovations and repair works that were done to give Tamale a facelift ahead of the 62nd National Independence Day parade at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in March.

But the structure has since being in a deplorable state after the designs that were used to decorate it were removed immediately after the Independence Day parade.

Speaking to Abdulai Abdul-Gafaru on the Diamond Power Drive on Thursday morning, Ing Darku said “ they didn’t consult us for the designs and these are public infrastructure that cars and motor bikes run over, so you need a structure that can withstand those things and what they did there is just sand kind of work and that is not the standard

Meanwhile, some business owners and residents near the roundabout are appealing to both the Tamale Metro Assembly and the Sagnarigu Municipal Assembly to collectively mobilize resources and fix the structure.

They believed the busy nature of the roundabout has made it a deathtrap and any delays in fixing it will result in fatal accidents that may lead to the loss of human lives and property.

They revealed that, the Mayor of Tamale Iddrisu Musah (Superior) in one of his visits to the community promised to replace the roundabout with traffic lights that will ensure the free flow of traffic and human safety.

Ing Darku however indicated that, repair works at the dilapidated roundabout will commence before the end of July. He said his outfit is liaising with a contractor to carry out the repairs as soon as possible.
