57,000 candidates to contest in both assembly membership and unit committee elections on Dec 17.

More than 57,0000 candidates are contesting the nationwide District Assembly and Unit Committee elections scheduled for Tuesday, December 17.

Of the figure, 18,519 are vying to become assembly members, while 38,520 want to be in the Unit Committees.

There are a total of 6,700 electoral areas and each electoral area would be represented by one assembly member.

For the Unit Committees, 33,500 are to be elected – five for every electoral area.

Ahead of tomorrow’s District Level Elections, the Electoral Commission has deployed 58,000 biometric verification devices including back up, in case some the devices break down.

According to a Deputy Chairperson of the EC, Samuel Tettey, the voting registers for all polling stations have also been printed and dispatched for the exercise.

Mr. Tettey who was addressing the media in relation to the impending District Level Elections also said 159,000 electoral officers have been trained for the elections.

Voting will begin at 07:00 AM and close at 05:00 PM.

The contestants of the District Assembly Elections comprise 17, 601 males and 909 are females.

At the Unit Committee level, 3,751 females are racing with 34,769 males.
