SM: NPP National Youth Organizer hopeful appeals to UTAG to end their strike

Director of Programmes and Operations at the office of the Vice President, Salam Mustapha is appealing to the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) to end their nationwide strike action and dialogue with government to press home their demands.

The NPP National Youth Organizer hopeful, made these remarks on his Facebook page on Friday 18 February, 2022 stated that, “I want to appeal to your good conscience to end this impasse with your employers in the sole interest of our young brothers and sisters in the universities”.

“Whilst you dialogue to press home your demands, the students should not bear the full brunt of this tango”, he said.

Members of the University Teachers Association of Ghana embarked on industrial action on Monday, January 10 in the quest to demand better conditions of service.

The university teachers have been asking the government to restore the conditions of service agreed upon in 2012/2013 which pegs the salary of an entry-level lecturer at $2,084.42.

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) appeared before the National Labour Commission (NLC) and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) on ways to reach a conclusion on the ongoing strike

Meanwhile The Labour Division of the Accra High Court has on Thursday 17 Feb 2022 granted an interlocutory injunction against the industrial action by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG).

This follows an appeal by the National Labour Commission (NLC) for an interlocutory injunction to halt the industrial action by UTAG.

The court on two occasions ordered both parties to adopt an out-of-court settlement, but the engagements ended inconclusively.

During proceedings on Tuesday, February 15, the NLC’s legal team appealed to the court for an interlocutory injunction against the action by UTAG before the hearing of its substantive case seeking enforcement of its order to UTAG to call off its industrial action.

Meanwhile, lawyer for UTAG, Kwasi Keli-Delataa objected to the motion and pleaded with the court to deal with the substantive matter before it.

But in his ruling, His Lordship Rockson Aboadwe said the negotiations between both parties would not yield the needed results if the strike persists and thus granted the injunction.

Proceedings have thus been adjourned to February 22, 2022, at 1:30pm.
