Northern Regional Muslim Council donates over Gh¢150,000 relief items to flood victims in Buipe and Volta Regions

The Northern Regional Muslims Council, on behalf of the people of the North, has donated a large number of assorted relief items worth G150,000.00, to support flood victims at Buipe and the Volta Regions.

The items include 200 bags of pmaize, 10 bags of rice and beans,500 tubers of yam, 500 bales of used clothing, 240 pieces of wax prints. Several pieces of sandals and boxes of cooking oil.

The gesture formed part of efforts by the Council to help ameliorate the suffering of the victims of the spillage of the Akosombo Dam and Buipe flood.

The spillage of the Akosombo Dam and the overflow of water from the Black Volta, coupled with torrential rainfall during this year’s rainy season had caused massive devastation within the two regions.

According to the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), 41,000 people have been displaced while a number of structures including houses, schools and health facilities, were also affected by the flood.

Presenting the items to the Northern Regional Minister for onward distribution to the leadership of the affected regions, the Chairman of the Council Sheikh Alhassan Abubakar Issah indicated, “Islam teaches Muslims that human beings are brothers and sisters, and when the fellow human is in distress, there is the need for the other to offer assistance and solidarity hence the support”.

He reiterated the Council’s readiness and commitment to take every step necessary to mitigate the plight of the victims of any form of disaster in any part of the country if such an unfortunate incident occurred.  “But I am not praying for that to happen”, he stressed.

Shiekh Issah Alhassan while consoling the victims stated, “the God who brought this upon you, will again shower you with His blessings sooner than later. This your pain and agony will be a thing of the past”, he prays.

He thus appealed to international bodies and organizations to assist the government to find a lasting solution to this perennial problem.

Sheikh Issah in his remarks commended benevolent individuals, stakeholders and philanthropists who contributed to enable the Council to put smiles on the faces of the victims.

On his part, the Northern Regional Minister Alhaji Shani Alhassan Saibu, who received the items on behalf of the affected regions, thanked the Northern Regional Muslims Council for putting up such an initiative to support the flood victims.
