Northern Region wins two medals at the National Arm-wrestling Championships

Northern Region won two medals at the recently held K-Balm National Armwrestling Championships in Accra.

The National Armwrestling Championships being organized by the Ghana Armwrestling Federation is an annual event to select athletes to represent Ghana at the Africa Armwrestling Championships.

This year’s event was the seventh in the series and brought together both male and female athletes of all categories including para-athletes from all over Ghana to compete for laurels at the one day event at the Wesley Grammar School in Accra last Saturday.

Representing the Northern Region, Rashida Abass won the gold medal in the 90kg female category while Sulemana Abdul Somed won bronze in the 65kg male category of the games. The two have does qualified to represent Ghana at the Africa Armwrestling Championships to be hosted in Ghana next month.

The ultimate winner of the event was Derek Adu Kwakye who is a member of the national Armwrestling team, the Golden Arms as he picked up yet another gold medal in the heavyweight division overcoming his challengers once again.

Armwrestling has become an attractive sport since Africa and Ghana Federation president of the Armwrestling Sport, Mr. Charles Osei Assibey assumed the helm as the President of the federation a couple of years ago.

The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) General Secretary has managed to make the once neglected sport an attractive one for kids and adults alike. Ghana has won several medals at the African Championships in recent times.
