While the outcome may not have been favorable to some, it is essential to remember that democracy thrives on respect for the electoral processes and the will of the majority. Such behavior undermines the principles of governance, trust, and mutual respect that are crucial for a stable society”.

REEP – GHANA YOUNG PEACE AMBASSADORS (YPA) PRESS STATEMENT ON POST ELECTION VIOLENCE

As young peace ambassadors of Rural Engagement and Empowerment Programme in Ghana, National Peace Council, 100% for the children and founded by CISU. We are compelled to address the troubling events unfolding in Ghana following the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections. It is worth commending the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana for conceding defeat and sending warm wishes and congratulation to the President Elect, John Dramani Mahama prior to the announcement of the election result by the Electoral Commission.

However, post-election events have recorded a series of unfortunate events throughout the country. Reported cases of chaos, vandalism and looting of state properties have eroded the democratic gains during this period. In one instance at Pong-Tamale on 9th December,2024, some irate youth invaded Agricultural Warehouse and made away several bags of rice and fertilizer, under the pretext of perceived delays in distributing these farm inputs meant for farmers and residents within the Savelugu Municipality.

These reported cases are largely attributed to young people in our society, hence an urgent call for security services and other stakeholders to address these amicably.

The recent elections were a significant moment in our democratic journey, reflecting the voice of the people. While the outcome may not have been favorable to some, it is essential to remember that democracy thrives on respect for the electoral processes and the will of the majority. Looting and vandalizing state properties is not only illegal but also detrimental to the very fabric of our democracy. Such behavior undermines the principles of governance, trust, and mutual respect that are crucial for a stable society.

As a nation, we must acknowledge the frustrations and grievances that may have led to these actions. Economic challenges, unemployment, and a lack of opportunities are pressing issues that our youth face daily. However, resorting to violence and destruction is not the solution. Instead, we must encourage constructive dialogue and peaceful demonstrations that allow citizens to express their discontent without harming their communities. It is vital for our youth to understand that their voices can be heard through peaceful means that promote change rather than chaos.

In light of these events, we urge all stakeholders—government officials, community leaders, and citizens—to come together to foster an environment of peace and understanding. It is crucial to engage with the youth, listen to their concerns, and provide platforms for open discussions. Initiatives that promote civic education and awareness about the importance of peaceful coexistence can help bridge the gap between the government and the youth, ensuring that their voices are valued and heard.

We call on the media to be professional and decorous in their reporting devoid of misinformation. Responsible reporting can help shape public perception and encourage a narrative of peace and resilience. It is essential to highlight stories of unity, cooperation, and positive engagement within communities, countering the prevailing narrative of violence and destruction. By showcasing efforts towards reconciliation and community rebuilding, we can inspire hope and encourage a collective commitment to peace.

Engage in Dialogue: We strongly encourage the government to reach out to a broad range of stakeholders, including representatives from major political parties, civil society organizations, and traditional leaders. By fostering open and honest dialogue, the government can address the grievances of disaffected citizens and seek to find peaceful resolutions to the underlying issues.

As we navigate these turbulent times, let us remember the power of unity. The strength of Ghana lies in its diversity and the shared aspirations of its people. We must work together to restore calm and rebuild trust in our institutions. This is not just a call for peace; it is a call for action—an invitation to all Ghanaians to join hands in creating a society where dialogue replaces violence and understanding replaces hatred.

In conclusion, I implore every citizen to reflect on the consequences of their actions and to choose the path of peace. Let us embrace our shared humanity and work towards a future that honors the democratic ideals we cherish. Together, we can overcome this crisis and emerge stronger, committed to building a Ghana that reflects the values of respect, dignity, and unity.

Long live our democracy!

Long live Ghana!

Thank you.
