PRESIDENT ORDERS ARREST OF GFA PRESIDENT

News has broke that the president of the republic of Ghana Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo has ordered for the arrest of Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kwesi Nyantakyi.

It still remains unclear the exact reasons for this but the news making rounds suggests its in connection with the latest expose of ace investigative journalist Anass Arimeyaw Anass titled #Number12 which premiers early next month on corruption in Ghana football.

Various major news outlets including our partners citi fm started breaking the news at about 4pm on Tuesday. Read how citi fm covered it all.

This is not the first time the GFA President has been accused of being involved in some nefarious activities.

British newspaper The Telegraph and Channel, in June 2014, accused the GFA and Kwesi Nyantakyi of being involved in some shady deals to fix international friendly matches for the senior national football team, the Black Stars.

The newspaper claimed that “the President of Ghana’s Football Association agreed for the team to play in international matches that others were prepared to rig.”

World football governing body, FIFA, referred the matter back to the GFA’s Ethics Committee after its preliminary investigation but announced it would “continue to monitor the investigations and any future proceedings.”

The Ethics Committee eventually cleared Kwesi Nyantakyi, of any wrongdoing.

However, the Committee revealed that it was necessary to conduct further investigations into two others implicated in the scandal, Obed Nana Kwame Nketiah and Mr. Christopher Forsythe.

This latest call for arrest is on charges defrauding by false pretence. This is believed to have been reached after the president of the republic watched a video of the said #Number12 expose.

President Akufo-Addo therefore issued the order after a security briefing on Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ latest investigative exposé on Ghana’s football scene.

The film, which has not been publicly screened yet but it is believed that Mr Nyantakyi who has been the president of the Ghana Football Association for 13 years may have been caught on camera in a compromised position.

Earlier Nyantakyi had rubbished claims that top officials of his organisation have started leaving the shores of Ghana in anticipation of the yet-to-be-released exposé.

However it is believed that Nyantakyi himself is not in the country at the moment.

The FA President has been in the limelight in recent times following his fallout and subsequent expulsion of Vice President of the FA, George Afriyie.

The move has raised questions about his intentions to seek re-election in 2019 when his current tenure comes to an end, despite stating on record that he will not seek re-election.
