The Northern Regional Police command has indefinitely suspended a planned demonstration by the Dagbon Center for Leadership and Development and other youth groups against the inclusion of Chereponi in the proposed North-East Region.
The Police after an emergency meeting with the organizers agreed to put the demonstration on hold sighting the visit by the President Nana Akuffo Addo to the region on Saturday November 9, 2018 as the reason why they cannot provide adequate security for the demonstrators. The Police have indicated that, they needed sufficient time to put in security checks ahead of the Presidents’ visit to the Northern Region.
Co-founder of the Dagbon Youth Movement Ishmael Abu in an interview with Diamond News after the meeting said the Regional Police command has promised to arrange a meeting between the Presidency and the Overlord of Dagbon to allow further discussions on the matter.
He said the group will however hit the streets with a massive demonstration if the Police fail to reach an advanced stage of negotiations by Friday November 8, 2018.
Abu Ishmael also indicated that, the group will soon begin legal processes at the Supreme Court to determine whether Chereponi should be part of the yet to be created North-East Region.
He narrated that, the commission that was tasked to look into the creation of new regions never visited Chereponi during their tour; hence it would be unconstitutional to include Chereponi into the proposed North-East Region.
