Ghanaian boxer Yaw Addo failed to make it to the medal zone of the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Australia.
Addo’s elimination was through a unanimous decision with England’s Peter McGrail in the bantamweight division in a quarter-final clash on Tuesday.
In the men’s Badminton singles, Daniel Sam lost Anthony Joe of Australia 2-0 while Abraham Ayittey lost to Aatish Lubah 2-0, exiting the competition in the round of 64.
In the women’s badminton event, Grace Atipaka progressed to the round of 32, beating Juliette Ah Wan of Seychelles 2-0. In the mixed doubles round of 64, Ghana beat Fiji 2-1 before losing 2-0 to Singapore hours later.
On the medal table, Australia leads with 117, followed by England with 73 and at the third position India with 20 medals. Meanwhile leading the Africa pack is South Africa with 19 medals followed by Nigeria with 6 medals; Ghana is yet to get to the medal zone in any competition at the games so far.
Meanwhile, Eight Cameroonian athletes have gone missing from their accommodation at the Commonwealth Games in Australia, team officials have confirmed.
Press attache Simon Molombe told the BBC officials viewed it as “desertion” and that the missing athletes had been reported to Australian police.
The three weightlifters and five boxers were last seen at different times on Monday and Tuesday, he said.Cameroon said the group had valid Australian visas until 15 May.
Officials named the missing athletes as weightlifters Olivier Matam Matam, Arcangeline Fouodji Sonkbou and Petit Minkoumba, and boxers Christian Ndzie Tsoye, Simplice Fotsala, Arsene Fokou, Ulrich Yombo and Christelle Ndiang.
The Commonwealth Games Federation said it would monitor the situation but athletes had “the right to travel freely” on their visas.
The Australian government has warned athletes against overstaying their visas.
The Australian Federal Police has been notified of the development, according to Kate Jones, a Queensland state government minister.
In 2012, seven Cameroonian athletes disappeared while in London for the Olympics.
