Northern Region sweeps eight medals at the African Arm-wrestling Championships

The Northern Region raced to an impressive eight medals at the African Arm-wrestling Championships in Accra last weekend.

The eight medals was a huge improvement from the two medals won by the region at the national Arm-wrestling championships a few weeks ago.

The Northern Region team consisting of athletes Rashida Abass, Sumaila Mujeeb and Abdul Somed Sulemana Sanaa all returned home with medals to their name.

Rashida Abass won three medals in all consisting of a Bronze medal in the youth women 60kg left arm and Gold medal in the right arm challenge of this same category. She capped it off with a Silver medal in the senior women 70kg right hand category.

Sumaila Mujeeb won Bronze in the youth 60kg left hand category, a Silver medal in the youth 60kg right hand category as well as a Bronze medal in the seniors’ 60kg category.

Abdul Somed Sulemana Sanaa won Bronze in the seniors men 55kg left hand challenge plus Silver in the right hand challenge of the same category.    

Lead official of the Northern Regional team Mr. Wisdom Abomega prior to the games was optimistic the team will deliver to the best of their ability. The Northern Regional team joined other athletes in the national Arm-wrestling team known as the Golden Arms for camping ahead of the games.

Overall, Ghana emerged winners of the championship with an impressive 132medals to top the medals table with 47 Gold, 55 Silver and 30 Bronze medals. Ghana did so by beating off competition from Egypt, Nigeria, Mali and Senegal who came in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively. The 2023 African Arm-wrestling Championship brought together 14countries from the continent to participate in the two-day event held at the GNAT Hall in Accra.

Apart from the top five countries, other countries such as Cameroon, Benin, Sierra Leone, Madagascar, Togo, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Chad and Gabon all participated.

This is the 12th edition of the African Arm-wrestling Championship and it is also the first time Ghana has hosted the event.
