Shop owners and other traders closed to the dumping site along the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium stretch of the Tamale Metropolis can now have a sigh of relief, after the management of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly (TaMA) led by MAYOR Sule Salifu has cleared a very huge refuse dump along the road.

The Assembly took the initiative to evacuate the refuse along the road, after several complaint by the production team of Diamond FM SIASA NI LƐBIGINSIM SAHA, and host of Diamond FM Power Drive Mohammed Ibn Adallah, openly made an appeal to city authorities to clear the refuse and expressed worry about the insanitary conditions within that location.

The dumping site located opposite the VIP bus terminal along the sports stadium stretch, has been abandoned for several months after ZoomLion allegedly took the waste container away, because of some issues surrounding it, and the allege selling of the site to private business operator.

Some of the shop owners who complained to Diamond News indicated that the unbearable foul smell emanating from the dumping of refuse is a worry to them. They said it has led to the influx of insects, particularly houseflies to their shops.

However, they said the intervention by the Mayor and the Assembly has brought a sigh of relief to them. Some of them also expressed their gratitude to the Mayor for initiating the evacuation exercise.

“Some of our colleagues had to close their shops because of unbearable foul smell emanating from the refuse”, they lamented.

Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Tamale Metropolitan Assembly (TaMA) Mr Amadu Mustapha Zakari, told the media that the Assembly spent over GHc10,000 to clear the waste, indicating that the assembly is taking steps to engage stakeholders within the vicinity after the exercise to curb the illegal dumping along the road.

“After the evacuation, we are also engaging the stakeholders to see how best we can collaborate to address the problem so that we will not witness what we are seeing today. Therefore, we are assuring the public that the waste bin will be brought back. And, we are appealing to them to start patronizing it as it used to be”, he stated.

He said the management of the Assembly will also engage some persons to supervise the place and anybody who defiles the rules will be made to face the full rigours of law.

Assemblyman for the Nyohini North electoral area Honorable Ibrahim Abdul Razak Naporo, commended the media for leading the crusade to ensure that the refuse at the dumping site was evacuating.
