Zunglana Colonel Mahamoud Tahiru (retired), elected as the Northern regional representative to the Council State

Zunglana Colonel Mahamoud Tahiru (retired), has been elected to the Council of Sates as Northern regional representative.

The 61-year-old Accountant polled 23 votes to beat Pishigulana and immediate past Managing Director of Stanbic Bank Ghana Limited, Naa Alhassan Andani, who had 8 votes.

A 44-year-old teacher, Abdul Rashid Mohammed, who was also in the race, had only 1 vote while the former NDC MP for Kumbumgu Ras Mubarak had no vote.

Zunglana Mahamoud Tahiru in a speech after the polls thanked the various assembly members and said his win was for the whole of the Northern region.

He promised to champion the developmental needs of the people in the Northern region.

The Care-Taker regional Minister of the Northern region, Salifu Sa-eed in a brief remark said the security background and the vast experience of Zunglana Colonel Mahamoud Tahiru (retired) will come to play and ensure lasting peace in Dagbon.

He added that Zunglana as a traditional ruler is better positioned to work with the traditional authority within the Northern region and to serve as an advocate for developmental projects for the next four years.

Before the commencement of the election, the Northern Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, Lucas Yiriyali announced that two aspirants had withdrawn their candidature.

Abubakari Sadiq, a 47-year-old businessman and one Mahamoud Alhassan a 65-year-old farmer did not assign reasons for their decision.

The Council of State serves as an advisory body to the President and meets from time to time.

According to Article 89(2) (C) of the 1992 Constitution, the election of the regional representatives will make the council of State complete.

Still on the Council of state elections; a former principal of Bagabaga College of Education in Tamale, the capital of the Northern region, Alhaji Adam Zakaria, has won the slot to represent the Savanna Region as its Council of State member.

He polled all 14 votes to beat his two other contenders, former GFA boss Alhaji M.N.D Jawula and a lecturer at the Bolgatanga Polytechnic, Mohammed Adam Abdul.

In his victory speech, Alhaji Zakaria promised to bring to the President’s attention, the water problems of the area.

He was the Principal of Bagabaga College for many years till he retired in 2015.

In the North East Region, 64 year old former DCE for Cherponi, Azumah Mamoro Sanda has been elected to the council of state.

Sanda also a former MP for Chereponi polled 12 to beat contenders such as Kolugu Maammara, an accountant and Sampa Iddrisu, a teacher. Both had zero votes.
