The overlord of Dagbon Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II has enskinned Alhaji Rtd Major Sulemana Abubakari as Chief of Tolon in the Tolon District of the Northern Region.
Naa Major Sulemana Abubakari who is 76 years, until his enskinment as chief of Tolon, was the Regent of Tolon. Per the customs of Dagbon, he was taken to Katini Palace (Graveyard of late Overlords) to undergo some form of traditional activities to mark a successful coronation.
Tolon is one of the traditional communities of Dagbon and its suburb of Tamale, the Northern Regional capital. Major Sulemana Abubakari had contested this position with the current chief of Waribogu Naa Abdulai.
Alhaji Major Sulemana Abubakari is the first son of the late Tolon Naa Alhassan Sulemana, whose final funerals rites was performed last Friday 22 March, 2019.
He was born at Tali a community near Tolon in 1943. The Rtd Major Sulemana Abubakari started schooling in 1949 in Tolon. After six years of primary education, he was enrolled with others to start the Kalpohini Middle school in Tamale. Two years later he gained admission into T.I Ahmadiya Secondary where he completed in 1961.
He was commissioned into the Ghana Armed Forces as officer in 1963.
The Rtd Major Sulemana Abubakari first assignment was at the Calvary where he was made one of the escorts of first president of Ghana Dr Kwame Nkrumah. His last post in the army was a commanding officer of ARMOURED Reck in 1980.
He was forced into exile in 1982 by the PNDC Government and returned to Ghana in 2000 when there was a change in Government
Naa Major Sulemana Abubakari in 2001 was appointed a member of the National Security Advisory Corps by the President of Ghana John Agyekum Kuffour.
The Rtd Major Sulemana Abubakari enskinment, which took place at the Gbewaa Palace at Yendi was witnessed by some chiefs and people of the area, who after the enskinment, escorted him back to his area (Tolon) to formally assume his role as Chief of the area.
