Ya-Na appeals to government to establish a herbal research centre in Yendi

The Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II has called on government to consider setting up a prototype of the Akwapim Mampong Herbal Research Center in Yendi.

According to the Ya-Na, the center will “help collate, mobilize and document the traditional herbal knowledge which has been practiced over the ages”.

Today, only the aged with white hair are into traditional medicine practice. Should the country fail to act fast and properly harness the ancient practice and allow the present practitioners to pass on, then the present generation would have lost colossal knowledge as the present practitioners would have gone to their graves with a sea chest full of precious knowledge ” he remarked.

The Ya-Na in an address to welcome the Vice President to the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi, said his request is informed by the establishment of the pharmacy department at the University for Development Studies.

He said the department was “resourced enough with academicians and professionals capable of providing the scientific support needed in creating a library of all traditional medicines in Dagbon and its environs”.

Ndan Ya-Na also announced that he has allocated over 500 acres of land for the establishment of a UDS satellite campus in Yendi.

“A UDS satellite campus in Yendi will assist in the development and rebuilding process of the Dagbon Kingdom”. ” The teeming youth of the area will benefit from the establishment of a University situated within the Eastern Corridor ” the Ya-Na added.

The Vice President Dr. Mohammedu Bawumia in a response said “We have talked to the University for Development Studies and they’re going to establish a satellite campus in Yendi”.

He also revealed that, government at its lastest National Security meeting, agreed to resurface the Yendi airstrip to make it functional.

He told the Ya-Na “You will soon see military planes taking off and landing here in Yendi, which will also facilitate speedy travels during very essential occasions”.

The Vice President whiles in the region will meet various Chiefs and their subjects and party functionaries within the Northern region.

He will end his three days working visit on Saturday September 05, 2020.
