Women farmers in rural Tamale exposed to the benefits of good nutrition at the household level.

Some selected women farmers in the Tamale Metropolis have been educated on good nutrition for their children’s benefit.

The training organized by the Women in Agricultural Development (WIAD) of the Tamale Metro Department of Agriculture and supported by Modernizing Agriculture (MARK), was to enable the beneficiary women to appreciate and patronize nutritional based food for their children’s health and mental growth.

About Eighty-four (84) women farmers from Zujung, and surrounding communities benefited from the training.

Ms Danies Amposah, the WIAD officer at the Tamale Metro Agriculture office, speaking to Diamond News after the training said, it formed part of activities by MoFA to ensure nutritional security in the country.

She explained that the objectives of the training is to impart the knowledge base of the rural women on how to prepare a nutritional foods and meals for their households

Ms. Amponsah indicated that rural women farmers grow numerous nutritional crops, but most of them were unable to utilize these for the benefit of their families, explaining that nutrition signifies growth and development of children and thereby urged mothers to ensure nutritional foods for their households.

“It is important to eat well to avoid paying more bills at the hospital, they are growing a lot of food but most of them end up selling it out,” she stated.

The participants were also taken through maternal health training and other health related issues affecting women.

Some of the women farmers that participated in the training said “this has come at the right time since the majority of us have been feeding our families the wrong way.”

“We didn’t know our local foods are more nutritious than the foreign ones and we will make sure we share these ideas with other colleagues in our various communities,” one of the participants remarked.
