Coalition of National Democratic Congress (NDC) Youth Groups in Tamale is demanding that the party should reject the former President John Dramani Mahama who is seeking to lead the party for the third time, if national executives of the party is choosibg people to be the forefront of the party based on their economics background.
According to the angry youth groups, the former president is not an economics, hence he is not qualified to also lead the party.
Their statement comes after the national leadership of the party on Tuesday, January 24, made some changes to its leadership in parliament with the Ranking Member of the Finance Committee and Member of Parliament for Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam Constituency in the Central Region Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, replacing the Tamale South MP Haruna Iddrisu as the Minority Leader.
The National Chairman of the largest opposition party, Mr. Johnson Aseidu Nketia in an interview explained why the leadership of the party took that decision and said, the 2024 general elections will be about the economy, “so you need to put your best man in the economy forward”, therefore the decision to replace Honorable Haruna Iddrisu with Cassiel Ato Forson.
However, the youth groups in a press briefing on Wednesday January 25, 2023, indicated, “if it is people with background on economy that should be chosen as leaders then H.E. John Dramani Mahama must also be replaced at the congress because he is equally “not an economist”.
“If we may ask, how many of our previous leadership from parliament were economists?
Addressing the media, Sayibu Abdul Rahaman Convenor of the Group described the development as “shameful, harmful, evil and a wicked decision taken by the executives”.
He narrated further, “Mr. Aseidu Nketia in his quest to defend his unpopular, self-seeking and wicked decision state that they did these on the bases of regional balance. If we may ask why was Honorable Ahmed Ibrahim from Banda maintained. Is it because he is from the same region with Mr. Aseidu Nketia and his co-host”?
“Another question that answers must be provided for; why was Honorable James Avege replaced with Honorable Agbadza? Both of them are from Volta Region of Ghana. Is it also because Fifi Kwatey is from Volta Region and serves as party general sectary”, he continues.
Sayibu Abdul Rahaman on behalf of the groups also threatened to vote against the party come 2024 general elections if the leadership of the party failed to reverse their decision.
“We wish to send a caution to this self-seeking National Chairman and General Secretary that they should prepared to continue to be in opposition with their self-seeking and parochial interest. Because we will not compromise Honorable. Haruna Iddrisu in place of anybody in the party, not even the former presidents”, they warned.
