Wa Senior High School wins the Northern Zone Cybersecurity Challenge after beating GHANASCO by one(1) point

Wa Senior High School (SHS) has won the Cybersecurity Challenge Quiz Competition in the Northern Zone. The school would compete with other winning schools from the Middle, Eastern and Southern zones of the National Cybersecurity Challenge scheduled on the 9th of  October 2024. 

The participating schools include Ghana Senior High School (GHANASCO), Wa Senior High School, Bolga Senior School, Nalerigu Senior School and Damongo Senior School. 

Following three rounds of the competition Damongo Senior High School placed fourth with 19 points, Bolga Senior High School third with 24 points, Ghana Senior High School (GHANASCO) placed second with 35 points.

Wa Senior High School who placed first with 36 points took home a cash prize of GH₵3,000, while Ghana Senior High School went home with GH₵2,000, Bolga Senior High School and Damongo Senior High School also went home with a cash prize of GH₵ 1,500 and GH₵ 1000 respectively.

The event was organized by the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) aimed at promoting cyber safety and awareness among senior high school students in the country.  

The competition also intends to enhance awareness on Cyber Security Best Practices for students, addressing the growing concern of students online vulnerability.

Speaking on the sideline of the event, Lead Child Online Protection Cyber Security Authority Madam Henrietta Asamoah, said the Cyber Security Authority is dedicated to safeguarding children’s online well-being, in accordance with its duty to oversee and advance cybersecurity in the country.

She said MIC and UNICEF report that, over 22000, emerges of children were uploaded on the internet and accessed in Ghana in the year 2022.

She added a report from the child online division of the cyber security authority also pointed out that over 64.35 percent of the children have access to pornographic materials on the internet, hence the cybersecurity challenge among senior high students in the country.

The theme for this year’s national cybersecurity challenge is EMPOWERING YOUNG, CREATING OPPORTUNITIES, PROMOTING A SAFER DIGITAL GHANA. 

The National Cybersecurity Challenge not only showcased the talent and potential of young students in the field of cybersecurity, but also highlighted the growing importance of cybersecurity awareness and education in the country.
