The Northern Regional Director of the Department of Urban Roads, Siisi Darko has assured that deplorable roads in the Tamale metropolis and Sanarigu would soon be fixed, since these have been awarded to a contractor for work to start.
Siisi Darko who gave the assurance on Diamond Power Drive, further stated that work will start on some of the roads within this week, “within this week work will start I am assuring you, he remarked.
He mentioned among others that major works will be done on the Lamashegu roundabout, industrial area stretching to the Abedi Pele roundabout.
According to Engineer Darko, the contractor is currently mobilizing materials to move to the site because the situation on the stretch is very bad,
“We are doing a whole resurfacing of that stretch,” he stated, indicating further that the department in the coming days will carry out a 40 Kilometers asphaltic overlay on some selected roads within the Tamale Metropolis.
“This is not going to be patching. It’s gone beyond patching. We are fixing all the roads. This week, we are going to carry out asphaltic overlay on some selected roads in Tamale. Some of the selected roads include Abedi Pele roundabout to stadium roundabout, Choggu roundabout to Gurugu, the main stretch going to Russian Bungalows. We are carrying out this exercise on some of the busy stretches within Tamale Metropolis and outside Tamale,” he explained.
Engineer Siisi Darko, however, appealed to commuters and other road users to cooperate with the contractor when the work commences.
Tamale Metropolis and Sagnarigu Municipal in the last few years have witnessed a trend of deteriorating roads leading to campaigns by motorists and commuters that ply the Tamale Industrial Area-Nyohini roads to get authorities to fix portions of the roads.
Several accidents have also been recorded on the stretch with two occurring simultaneously a month ago. Also, vehicles continue to break down at some particular sections of the road, which causes unnecessary inconveniences to commuters.
