TaMA distributes dustbins to shop owners in Tamale.

Management of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly led by Mayor Sule Salifu, in collaboration with Zoomlion Ghana has disbursed several dustbin containers to shop owners along the Aliu Mahama stadium stretch.

The assembly, as part of its measures to curb illegal dumping of refuse also presented a waste container to “Fatawu bicycle chop bar” and Sharlot eatery along the sports stadium stretch.

The Assembly over the weekend cleared a heap of refuse dumped along the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium Road. This was after series of complaints by Tamale based Diamond FM.

Addressing the media before the exercise, the Mayor of Tamale stated that, “this is part of activities the assembly is taking to addressed the current sanitation situation within the metropolis”.

“The containers that has been distributed is not for free, people have to pay to enable Zoomlion to provide the necessary logistics for evacuation of the waste”, he emphasized.

The Tamale metropolis in 2010 was adjudged the Cleanest City in Ghana however the situation has been different in the last few years as several heap of refuse has not been attended to.

However, city authorities led Mayor Sule Salifu whiles speaking with a section of the media said the assembly in collaboration with Zoomlion will soon embark on an evacuation exercise within the Metropolis.

“We want to ensure that Tamale is restored to its good name where it was described as the cleanest city in the country, we cannot do this alone the assembly has partner with zoom lion to evacuate all heap refuse within the Metropolis, he stated.

He said the leadership of the assembly has put measures in place to provide every household within the Metropolis a dustbin to curb the illegal dumping of waste in the Metropolis 

“We will distribute this dustbin to every household within Tamale in conjunction with the assemblymen to support the government to make Tamale a cleaner city, Sule Salifu stressed.

Mayor Sule Salifu also revealed that, the assembly has received the blessings and support from the various traditional authorities within the Tamale Metropolis to pursue these measures to ensure the Tamale Metropolis is clean.  

He said the assembly is committed to partner with other stakeholders within the Metropolis to ensure this particular exercise are sustained, “we just want to make Tamale clean” he stressed.

He thus called on the media and other stakeholder within the Metropolis to collaborate with the Assembly to manage the waste effectively.

The mayor, before the disbursement of the waste containers earlier paid a courtesy call on the Nyohani chief Naa Abdulai Mohammed and Jung Naa Sulemana Simani, at various their palaces to seek their support.

The chiefs commended the mayor and pledged to support the assembly to achieved its agenda.
