SELECTED YOUTH IN THE NORTHERN REGION RECEIVE TRAINING IN THE PREVENTION OF VIOLENCE AND EXTREMISM.

The West Africa Centre for Counter –Extremism (WACCE) has begun training some selected youth on preventing violent extremism in the northern region and the country at large.

About 100 youth including selected political party youth representatives are participating in the two days workshop following which, they are all expected to serve as peace ambassadors in their various communities.

The Executive Director of WACCE, Mutaru Mumuni Muqthar, at the official launch in Tamale, bemoaned the recurrent chieftaincy, land and other related conflicts that have inundated Northern Ghana over the years, hence his outfit’s intervention.

He said chieftaincy and ethnic violence remained the single biggest source of insecurity and instability in the country, most especially in Northern Ghana.

Speaking to Diamond News, Mutaru Mumuni noted with deep concern that the youth remain at the fore-front of violent conflicts. He thereby urged the participants to actively take part in the training to enable them support peace efforts in the region.

In her statement the Culture Affairs Officer at the US Embassy in Ghana, Ms Elizabeth Ategou, commended the WACCE for the training, saying the United States Government is committed to supporting Ghana and other Africa Nations with measures to prevent violence and extremism.

She urged the participants to take charge of their future and to educate their peers on the importance of peaceful co-existence.
