Rose Amoanimaa adjudged SWAG personality of the year at 49th edition

Ghanaian high jumper Rose Yeboah Amoanimaa was adjudged the SWAG Personality of the year 2024 at the 49th edition of the prestigious Sports Writers Association of the Ghana (SWAG) awards ceremony on Friday night. She beat off competition from Armwrestler Grace Mintah. Rose also won the Female Athlete of the Year award.
Rose took home the highest honour on the night for her sterling performance in Ghana and abroad for the year under review. Rose successfully defended her African Games championship title in high jump at the African Games held in March, 2024 in Ghana with a jump of 1.90 metres.
Rose Yeboah Amoanimaa later in the year 2024 qualified for her first ever Olympic Games in Paris 2024 in August. A competition she didn’t disappoint even though she failed to make it to the final after she was unsuccessful at a height of 1.92metres. She nonetheless wrote her name in history as Ghana’s first ever female high jumper at the Olympics.

Even before the Olympics, Rose Amoanimaa Yeboah retained her high jump gold medal after winning the 2024 Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) championship in Douala in Cameroon. This feat was achieved after she also won gold at the FISU World University Games in 2023. She has an overall record of 2x All African Games Champion, 2x African Champion, 1x Under 20 Champion and 1x World University Games champion.
The 49th edition of the SWAG awards was held at the Accra International Conference Center (AICC) on Friday 24th January, 2025 and brought together the creme de la creme of the sports industry in Ghana.
The event was also graced by the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Her Excellency Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman and Minister for Sports and Recreation -Designate, Hon. Kofi Adams. In attendance also were former national athletes and sports enthusiasts.

Hockey Player Of The Year – Elizabeth Opoku of GRA Ladies.
Swimmer Of The Year – Abeiku Jackson.
Weightlifter Of The Year- Winifred Ntumi.
Referee Of The Year – Nii Otoo Larkyne, Armwrestling.
Club Of The Year – FC Samartex.
Cyclist Of The Year – Emmanuel Sesi.
Taekwondo Athlete Of The Year – Kelvin Amuzu.
Sports Personality Of The Year – Rose Yeboah Amoanimaa.
Sports Journalist of the Year- Bright Kankam Boadu.
Prestigious SWAG President Award- Coach James Kwesi Appiah.
Winners of the SWAG awards are determined by votes from members of the association nationwide as well as SWAG Exco for some selected categories. The SWAG awards is the oldest sports wards scheme in Ghana which has been in existence since 1975. The next awards ceremony will mark the Golden Jubilee Celebration of the awards next year.
