Police, exchange gun fire with Robbers At Savelugu-Walewale Highway

Information reaching Diamondfmonline, indicates that in the early hours of Thursday, June 27, 2019, police and some suspected armed robbers exchanged gunfire at the Savelugu-Walewale highway.

The shooting occurred after the robbers blocked the road and attempt to rob passengers travelling on that stretch.

Confirming the incident to Diamondfmonline, the Public Relation Officer of the Northern Regional police command DSP Mohammed Yussif  Tanko said the police received information at about 2:00 am on Thursday that armed robbers had blocked the road at Gbannyali near the Savelugu School for the Deaf.

According to him, the command quickly mobilized personnel from police check points on the road to deal with the situation. He said When Police got to the scene, the robbers numbering about six had lined up vehicles and had just started to rob, opened fire on police and police returned fire and pursued the fleeing robbers into the bushes.

The robbers according to DSP Yussif  Tanko, abandoned three motorbikes at the scene which is now in police custody saying “some of the suspect might have escaped with gun wounds”. He has however called on inhabitants and health facilities to report any suspicious injuries for necessary action.

DSP Yussif  Tanko also entreated communities around Savelugu to be on the lookout for strange and suspicious persons in the communities and report same to the Police. He also called on the general public to assist the police to trace the owners of the seized motorbikes.
