Opposition NDC goes to the poll tomorrow to elect flag bearer ahead of General elections in 2020

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) would go to the polls on Saturday, February 23, to select a leader for the 2020 Presidential Election.

Almost 280,000 delegates of the NDC are expected to cast their vote to elect a flag bearer to represent the party in the upcoming 2020 Election. The election, will take place in all the party’s constituencies nationwide and will be conducted by the country’s electoral body, the Electoral Commission.

Seven stalwarts are ready for the face off to receive the endorsement of delegates in the election, to be held at the constituency level across the nation.

They are: Goosie Tanoh, a businessman, Former President John Dramani Mahama, Professor Joshua Alabi, a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies and Alban Sumana Bagbin, Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament.

The rest are Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, a Former Minister of Education and Trade, Sylvester Mensah, a former Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority and Alhaji Nurudeen Iddrisu, a businessman.

This is the fourth time the NDC is setting the stage for a competitive selection of a flagbearer, as the Party’s candidates for the 1992, 1994, 2000 and 2016 elections, were selected through popular acclamation.

All aspirants, after going through the vetting process successfully, intensified their campaigns throughout the country to convince the delegates to give them the chance to lead them, in their bid to unseat the ruling New Patriotic Party in the 2020 Election.

The primary was rescheduled from Saturday, January 26, 2019, over an injunction filed by two of its members, with regard to the guidelines of the conduct of the poll.

However, the matter was later settled out of court.

Still with the NDC: The Northern Regional Secretariat of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has cleared 25,432 delegates to vote in the party’s presidential primaries to be held on Saturday in the Northern, Savannah and North East Regions.

The number of delegates includes nine branch executives each from all 2,688 polling stations and constituency and regional executives in all the 31 constituencies in the three regions and they will all converge at a designated centre in each constituency to cast their ballots.

A Member of the Elections Committee of the NDC in the Northern Region, Alhaji Haruna Friday who briefed the GNA on the preparations towards the presidential primaries in Tamale, said all was set for the exercise in the three regions.

Alhaji Friday said agents of all the candidates were being involved in all the processes of the elections as well as the distribution of election materials to ensure transparency and smooth elections.
