Northern Regional Muslim Council, Engages Youth Groups, Opinion Leaders, ahead of December 7
The Northern Regional Muslim Council of Ghana (NRMCG), has engaged some youth groups, opinion leaders, academicians, imams, chiefs, youth chiefs of the Northern Region as part of efforts towards ensuring incidents free before, during and after the December 7th polls.
The event which took place in Tamale with a theme, “Promoting Peaceful Elections, the Role of the Muslim Ummah”, was aimed at strengthening the youth commitment to peace, tolerance and social cohesion in the region.
The peace durbar formed part of the activities by the Northern Regional Muslim Council of Ghana (NRMCG), to sensitize the masses most especially the youth in the region, the need to embrace peace ahead of the upcoming general elections.
In his welcoming remarks, the Chairman of the Northern Regional Muslim Council, Sheikh Issah Alhassan Abubakari, urged the youth to remain at the forefront of peace in the run-up to Election 2024.
He said it is important for the youth to be guarded and not allow themselves to be used as conduits for political violence.
“Let us tell the politicians that the future is us. When they are talking about the future, they are talking about we the youth. The elderly today are already in their future. They have enjoyed their days. So when our future is devastated, it means that, it is our own future that is going to be devastated”, he reminded.
Chairman of the occasion Alhaji Mohammed Abdul Aziz, who is also the Northern Regional Manager of Bank of Ghana, in his acceptance speech, said the youth hold the future of the country and must therefore be properly engaged and guided to play a very active role in preserving the peace in the country.
He indicated that the nation is often described as an island of peace, having been surrounded by neighbouring countries who have tested one major conflict or the other. “We cannot afford to fail ourselves this time”, he emphasized.
“Peace is a priceless commodity, and we must not conduct ourselves in ways that would make us encounter the opposite of peace”, he encourages.
He thus entreats all to work towards ensuring peace before, during and after the elections.
Doctuur Mohammed Awal Issah during his presentation, while calling on electoral commission of Ghana (EC) to ensure a level playground to all parties, also called on religious leaders and chiefs to be mindful of their utterances and refrain from mingling with political issues ahead of the December 7 polls.
