The Northern Regional Directorate of the Ghana Health Service, has held a stakeholder meeting to discuss plans for preventing a potential cholera outbreak in the region during this year raining period.

The meeting brought together some selected media practitioners, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), staff and management of the Northern Regional Ghana Health Service among others.

In his welcoming remarks, the Northern Regional Health Director, Dr Chrisantus Kubio, indicated that although there are no cholera cases in the region, it is important to take early actions to create public awareness about the disease that claimed more than 40 lives across the country last year.

Dr. Kubio in his address on Thursday urged the media in the region to use their platforms to support public education efforts on cholera prevention.

He said media involvement would be instrumental in encouraging the general public to adopt the practice of good hygiene.

“There are no cholera cases in the region, but we want to appeal to you to help educate the public on good hygiene practices to avoid a cholera outbreak, because the public trusts the media”, he noted.

On her part, Manager for Health Promotion at the Ghana Health Service, Patience Boahen, called on residents in the region to follow strict sanitary practices as the rainy season approaches amidst an ongoing cholera outbreak to avert an escalation of cases.

Madam Patience Bohen while calling on residents to follow strict sanitary practice, also urged the residents in the Region who defecate in the open to desist from the practice.
