Northern Region Muslim Council Calls on Government to Tackle Flooding with Urgent Measures

The Northern Region Muslims Council is urging government to treat perennial flooding as a matter of urgency and put in place lasting solutions, following the devastating floods that hit Accra and other parts of the country on Monday, 29th June 2026.

In a condolence message issued on Monday, 6th July 2026, the Council expressed sympathy to families who lost loved ones and commended government for its swift response to victims. However, it said more must be done to prevent a repeat.

“It is imperative that government treats the issue of perennial flooding as a matter of urgency and provides lasting solutions,” the statement signed by Council Chairman Sheikh Issa Alhassan Abubakarii said.

Citing “prevention is always better than cure,” the Council called on government to introduce “workable measures and policies to halt these recurring floods.”

Key recommendations to government
The Council specifically appealed to engineers and urban planners to put their expertise to work by designing and constructing proper drainage systems that can effectively direct and contain heavy downpours.

It also urged District, Municipal, and Metropolitan Assemblies to strictly enforce their by-laws and stop the practice of permitting people to put up buildings in waterways and other flood-prone areas.

The Council noted that while government support is important, “the government alone cannot adequately and sufficiently replace all the lost properties and livelihoods.” It appealed to benevolent individuals, philanthropists, and corporate bodies to also come to the aid of flood victims.

Beyond infrastructure, the Council admonished citizens to desist from dumping refuse into drains and called on all Ghanaians not to politicize the disaster.

“We should all put our shoulders to the wheel to address this national problem permanently,” the statement added.

The Council further asked Imams and Mosques across the Northern Region to intensify prayers for Allah’s protection against calamities.

“May Allah protect our nation and grant us relief from future disasters. Ameen.”

The June 29 floods claimed several lives and destroyed property in Accra and other regions, renewing calls for comprehensive flood control measures nationwide.
