Nigerian politician Ibori loses appeal against UK graft conviction

British authorities are expected to resume efforts to confiscate tens of millions of dollars’ worth of assets belonging to former Nigerian state governor James Ibori after he lost an appeal against his conviction.

Mr Ibori was jailed in the UK after pleading guilty to laundering nearly 50million Pounds in 2012. He was released in December 2016 and deported to Nigeria having served half of his 13-year jail sentence.

Though based in Nigeria, the former Delta state governor, appealed against his conviction. He alleged that a police officer who investigated him was himself corrupt.

Mr Ibori had enjoyed a jet-setting lifestyle, buying multi-million dollar properties in England, South Africa and the United States as well as luxury cars. At the time of his arrest, he was in the process of buying a $20m Bombardier private jet.
