NDC’s Ofosu Ampofo breaks silence after leaked tape controversy
The NDC Chairman has been tight-lipped since an audio in which he was allegedly inciting violence leaked.
But addressing the media at the NDC headquarters in Accra, Mr. Ampofo
preferred to focus on the party’s bid to return to power in 2020.
According to him, the NDC is ready to use all of his structures and machinery to ensure victory in the 2020 elections
He said all party executives are also working above themselves to enable John Mahama emerge victorious in 2020.
“[There’s a role for] everybody to play, so that together we will work
assiduously and capture power from the NPP administration. Once again I
would like to commend all of you and assure you that we will work
hand-in-gloves with you and support our flagbearer to deliver a massive
victory for the NDC come December 2020,” he said.
“We believe that by the 7th of January 2021, this country will be
swearing in a new President. And that new president will be no other
person than His Excellency John Dramani Mahama.
“We want to use this occasion also to assure him of the readiness of
the party to put all the structures and machinery of the party to
support the campaign and ensure that your [Mahama] unfinished agenda,
which was painfully truncated in December 2016, will be restored and
hope once again will be restored to Ghanaians.”
The press conference was attended by former president Mahama, as well
as failed presidential aspirants Prof. Joshua Alabi, Alban Bagbin,
Goosie Tanoh, Dr. Ekwow Spio Garbrah, Sylvester Mensah and Nurudeen
Iddrisu.
NDC General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia, was also in attendance, together with other executives of the party.
Meanwhile, Ofosu Ampofo has come in for strong criticism after his rather controversial tape was allegedly leaked.
On the tape, the NDC Chairman allegedly urged the party’s communicators
to target the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa.
He is also heard allegedly inciting them to insult the Chairman of the National Peace Council, Rev. Emmanuel Asante.
In another part, he is again heard admitting that the NDC had a ballot
box protection unit in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency during the
by-election.
The NDC has, however, denied the authenticity of the said audio, insisting it was doctored.
