The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Nanton Constituency, Dr. Mohammed Sherif Abdul-Khaliq, has organised a free eye screening exercise for his constituents suffering from diverse eye problems.

The one-day exercise was used to provide free medication and eye glasses to those with mild conditions, while those with serious conditions were offered surgical operations to correct defects.

He undertook the exercise in partnership with his developmental partners, a non-profit organisation.

The initiative saw the beneficiaries converging on a number of Community-based Health and Planning Services (CHPS) compounds at Zhang, where eye specialists, aided by a number of health practitioners, screened the people for various eye defects including cataract and glaucoma among others.

Briefing the media on behalf of the MP, the deputy communication officer for NDC, Alhassan Mohammed, said “as a representative of the people, one major issue the MP had observed was the increasing number of people with eye problems in the constituency, hence the screening.

“Our MP considers the eye as one of the most important commodities in the human body.

He indicated that the Nanton lawmaker wanted to run an exclusive leadership, therefore needed every single person within the constituency to be in a healthy condition, therefore the screening.

According to him, out of 132 individuals who benefited from the exercise, 47 persons with severe conditions would undergo a surgery to restore their sights with the remaining beneficiaries receiving one form of medication and medical eye glasses. “This is a huge relief to the people.”

Some of the beneficiaries who speak to Diamondfmonline.com, after going through the exercise, thank the MP for coming out with such an initiative to improve their sights.
